MASTERCLASS VTS AND DEMENTIA

This masterclass will cover the use of VTS for a specific target group: people with dementia. To make it accessible for the international VTS community it is an English spoken event. The interest in the value of VTS discussions with this group of people is growing. Anita Liemburg will perform this interactive lecture. She has ample experience working with people with dementia and their relatives, as well in museums as in elderly homes. She is the founder of Muzeaal verhalen (Museum Stories), a company specialized in interactive guided tours. Since this summer she is part of the team of VTS Nederland.

Anita is a trainer to museum educators that want to learn how to give guided tours to people with dementia and their family/caretakers. The program and training Unforgettable Museum was inspired by Meet me at MoMa, that in turn makes use of elements of VTS. In 2013 it was introduced in the Netherlands and has been very successful in its Dutch adaptation. Many local museums offer their version of the Unforgettable Museum guided tour. During the masterclass Anita will elaborate on the similarities and differences between VTS and Unforgettable Museum. People with dementia sometimes need an adapted approach. Unforgettable Museum built up experience that Anita will share with us.  

By looking at art, people with dementia can exchange ideas with their loved ones, without having to use their short term memory. Looking at art offers and entrance into the long term memory and personal experience, and this stimulates social engagement. Their confidence grows, as does their sense of dignity. On top of that, they meet other people with dementia in a safe and inspiring environment.

In the American online VTS magazine Site Specific an article appeared on the topic of doing VTS (online) with people with dementia that is worth reading. The title is ‘Using VTS to build conversations with people living with dementia’.

Masterclasses are 1,5 hrs meetings that are initiated by and for the VTS community, hosted by VTS Nederland. During a Masterclass a topic is explored, relevant to VTS practice.
